At some point we’ve all felt like our boss does not appreciate us. You work hard, you listen, you be the best that you can be, but you just don’t get the recognition your effort and commitment deserves, but we believe in you! So, we’ve put together some helpful hints on how to improve your presence at work, so you can get the appreciation and pay that your hard work has earned.
1. Ask Your Manager Directly
How do you go about asking your line manager for praise? It’s your line managers responsibility to set the work that you have been tasked to complete, it’s also in their remit to critique that work and supply an honest assessment. Providing an open and honest space for constructive feedback and praise is helpful for not only your output as an employee but your mental health. Sometimes it can be as simple as everyone is too busy to congratulate you on a job well done, but improvement can only be measured by your past endeavours. Having an honest conversation with your boss on where you are heading could be the trickle of appreciation and drive that you need.
2. Speak to Your Colleagues
If you’re looking for appreciation or acceptance in the work that you do, the quickest way is to have an honest conversation with your colleagues, they are the ones that work with you day in day out. Have an open chat about how you are perceived by your team and your audience, and what skills you can improve on to be more visible in the workplace. You’ll find that your colleagues will have an insight on you that you can’t see. Have a group self-appraisal by bringing only positive traits to the table, it’ll shine a light on how others see you, and then how you can see yourself.
3. Increase Your Visibility
A good idea within a working environment to encourage appreciation, is to increase your visibility to your boss and colleagues. That can mean proactively increasing your voice to ensure your ideas and visions are noticed. When your output and proposals are noticed by others because of your tradecraft, it can be an effective tool to push for that promotion or recognition you deserve, as you are being noticed. If you lead a team, ensure they get acknowledged for their contribution, so everyone can see what you have done as a collective from your manager and above. You can use this to publicise your own leadership qualities by pointing out what changes and alternatives you have guided within your team. Take the time to pursue your own agenda to be noticed if needed.
4. Don’t Let Self-Doubt Stop You
Not getting the recognition you warrant and deserve can be soul destroying but believing in yourself by doing the best you can whilst in work is imperative. It doesn’t really matter if it is in work or not, in life, some people will knock you down, and others will take the praise that you have earned. Don’t let any self-doubt creep in by the lack of recognition. A lack of appreciation from your peers should not determine how you perceive yourself.
5. Is it Time to Move On?
If you continue to feel unnoticed and underappreciated, it might be time to love on to somewhere where your talents are better suited.
